The running pace calculator converts between pace, time, and distance so you can plan training runs, set race goals, and understand your progress. Enter any two of the three variables and get the third — plus projected finish times for every major race distance. Pace is the foundation of structured running. Whether you are following a Hal Higdon plan, a Garmin training programme, or your own schedule, every workout is prescribed at a pace zone — easy, tempo, threshold, or race pace. Knowing your current pace for each zone lets you train correctly: too fast causes injury and burnout; too slow produces insufficient adaptation. This calculator is equally useful for race day planning. If you want to run a sub-45-minute 10K, you need to average 4:30/km. If your current comfortable pace is 5:15/km, you can see exactly how far that projects to in a half marathon or marathon — and set a realistic goal rather than guessing.
How to Use the Running Pace Calculator
The Running Pace Calculator is designed to give you an accurate answer in seconds. Follow these steps:
- Step 1: Choose your calculation mode using the tabs — Calculate Pace (from distance + time), Calculate Time (from distance + pace), or Calculate Distance (from pace + time).
- Step 2: Select your preferred units — kilometres or miles.
- Step 3: Enter the required inputs. For pace: enter distance and your finish time. For time: enter distance and your target pace. For distance: enter your pace and running time.
- Step 4: Results appear instantly. Scroll down to see your pace projected across common race distances: 5K, 10K, half marathon, and marathon.
No account or sign-up required. All calculations run locally in your browser — nothing is stored or transmitted to any server.
How It Works
Pace (min/km) = Time (minutes) ÷ Distance (km) | Time = Pace × Distance | Distance = Time ÷ Pace
All three calculations derive from the same fundamental relationship: Pace = Time ÷ Distance Time = Pace × Distance Distance = Time ÷ Pace Pace is expressed as minutes per kilometre (or per mile) — a measurement of how long each unit of distance takes. Time is total elapsed time in hours, minutes, and seconds. Distance is in kilometres or miles. Example: You run 10 km in 52 minutes 30 seconds. Time in minutes = 52.5 Pace = 52.5 ÷ 10 = 5 min 15 sec per km (5:15/km) Projected 5K finish = 5.25 × 5 = 26:15 Projected half marathon (21.097 km) = 5.25 × 21.097 = 1:50:46 Projected marathon (42.195 km) = 5.25 × 42.195 = 3:41:31 Note: race performance at longer distances typically slows due to fatigue. The projections assume constant pace, which is reasonable for shorter distances but tends to underestimate marathon times by 5–15 minutes for most recreational runners. Common adjustment: add 5% for half marathon and 10–15% for full marathon projections based on shorter-distance paces.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is a good running pace per km?
Average recreational runners finish at 5:30–7:00 per km. A 5:00/km pace is a strong recreational standard — it projects to a 25-minute 5K or 3:31 marathon. Sub-4:30/km (under 22:30 for 5K) is considered advanced amateur. Elite marathon runners average under 2:55/km. A "good" pace is relative to your experience and goals — consistent improvement on your own times is the most meaningful benchmark.
How do I calculate my running pace?
Divide your total run time (in minutes) by the distance covered (in km or miles). For example, 48 minutes for 8 km = 6:00/km pace. In miles: 48 minutes for 5 miles = 9:36/mile. The calculate pace tab above does this automatically — enter your distance and time for an instant result.
What pace do I need for a sub-2 hour half marathon?
A sub-2-hour half marathon (21.097 km) requires an average pace faster than 5:41/km (9:09/mile). Specifically, 1:59:59 works out to exactly 5:41/km. Most coaches recommend training at your target half marathon pace during tempo runs, with long runs at 60–90 seconds per km slower than race pace.
How do I convert pace from km to miles?
To convert a per-km pace to per-mile pace, multiply by 1.60934. A 5:00/km pace equals 5:00 × 1.60934 = 8:03/mile. To convert miles to km pace, multiply by 0.62137. A 9:00/mile pace equals 9:00 × 0.62137 = 5:35/km. The calculator handles this automatically — toggle between km and miles using the unit selector.
Is the running pace calculator free?
Yes — free with no sign-up required. All calculations run instantly in your browser and no data is stored. Switch between pace, time, and distance modes, and toggle between km and mile units. Use the race projections to set realistic targets for your next event.
