How It Works

Age = Today − Date of Birth (accounting for leap years and month length)

Age calculation works by subtracting the birth date from today's date, accounting correctly for varying month lengths and leap years. The day component counts remaining days in the current month after accounting for full months. The month component counts full calendar months elapsed since the birth month. The year component counts full years. Because February has 28 or 29 days depending on the year, and months vary between 28 and 31 days, naive subtraction produces incorrect results in many cases — correct date arithmetic requires knowing the calendar layout for each intervening year. The zodiac sign is determined by the month and day of birth against the standard Western astrology calendar (Aries: March 21 – April 19, through Pisces: February 19 – March 20). The birthday countdown subtracts today from the next occurrence of the birth month and day, wrapping to the following calendar year if the birthday has already passed this year. Total days lived is simply the number of calendar days between birth date and today — a straightforward measure of elapsed time that grows by one every midnight regardless of months or years.
