The grade calculator tells you the exact exam score needed to finish a course at your target grade. Students reach for it in the final weeks of a semester when planning how hard to study for finals — or to find out whether a low mid-term grade can still be recovered. Enter your current grade, the exam weight, and the grade you want. This tool is most useful when you are deciding how to allocate your study time across multiple finals. If one course requires a 55% on the final to pass and another requires a 91%, the second clearly deserves more preparation hours — and this calculator gives you those numbers in seconds for every course on your schedule. It also provides honest perspective when expectations need adjusting. A result above 100% means the target is mathematically impossible through exam performance alone. Knowing this early leaves time to explore options: extra credit, speaking with the professor, or revising the target downward to focus energy where it can make a real difference. A negative result is the good-news scenario — it means you have already locked in your grade regardless of how the final goes.

How to Use the Grade Calculator

The Grade Calculator is designed to give you an accurate answer in seconds. Follow these steps:

  1. Step 1: Enter your current grade (%) in the Current Grade (%) field. The valid range is 0 to 100. The default is 75%. Adjust this to match your specific situation.
  2. Step 2: Enter your desired final grade (%) in the Desired Final Grade (%) field. The valid range is 0 to 100. The default is 80%. Adjust this to match your specific situation.
  3. Step 3: Enter your final exam weight (%) in the Final Exam Weight (%) field. The valid range is 0 to 100. The default is 30%. Adjust this to match your specific situation.
  4. Step 4: Click Calculate to see your results instantly. The output updates as soon as you submit.

How It Works

Required Score = (Target Grade − Current Grade × (1 − Exam Weight)) ÷ Exam Weight

Formula: Required Score = (Target Grade − Current Grade × (1 − Exam Weight)) ÷ Exam Weight This rearranges the standard weighted average formula. Your final course grade is a blend of your current standing and your exam score, each weighted by its share of the total marks. Solving backwards isolates the exact exam score needed. Example: current grade 74%, target grade 80%, final exam worth 30%. Required = (80 − 74 × 0.70) ÷ 0.30 = (80 − 51.8) ÷ 0.30 = 28.2 ÷ 0.30 = 94% A result above 100% means the target is mathematically unreachable through exam performance alone — extra credit or a revised goal are the only options. A negative result means the target grade is secured regardless of exam performance. The formula assumes the current grade represents all coursework except the final exam. Common mistakes when using this calculator: entering the exam weight as a decimal (0.30) instead of a percentage (30) will produce an incorrect result — always enter the percentage form. Also verify that your "current grade" represents everything graded so far, not just the midterm. If your syllabus has multiple components (homework, quizzes, midterm) that together make up 70% of the course, your current grade should be the weighted average across all of those components, not just the most recent grade you received.

Frequently Asked Questions

What grade do I need on my final exam to pass?

It depends on your current grade and how much the final is worth. If your current grade is 65% and passing requires 60%, with the exam worth 40%: Required = (60 − 65 × 0.60) ÷ 0.40 = (60 − 39) ÷ 0.40 = 52.5%. You only need 52.5% on the final to pass. Run your specific numbers — the result can be surprising in both directions.

How do I calculate my final grade with weighted percentages?

Multiply each component score by its weight (as a decimal) and sum the results. Example: homework 85% × 0.20 + midterm 72% × 0.30 + final 88% × 0.50 = 17 + 21.6 + 44 = 82.6%. This is your weighted final grade. This calculator works backwards from that formula to find the missing exam score that produces a target total.

What happens if I need more than 100% on my final exam?

If the required score exceeds 100%, the target grade is mathematically impossible through exam performance alone. Options include asking about extra credit assignments, speaking to your professor about an incomplete grade, or revising your target downward. Also check whether the exam weight in this calculator matches your actual syllabus — an incorrect weight is a common input error.

Can a bad midterm still be overcome by the final?

Yes, often — the lower the midterm weight and the higher the final exam weight, the more room there is to recover. A 50% midterm that counts for 20% of the grade is less damaging than one worth 40%. Use this calculator to see exactly what final exam score you need; the answer is frequently more achievable than it feels after a disappointing result.

Is the grade calculator free?

Yes — completely free with no sign-up or account needed. All calculations run in your browser and nothing is stored. Bookmark it for easy access during exam season.
