The tip calculator works out your gratuity and splits the bill in seconds. Enter the bill total, choose your tip percentage, and set the number of people — the tip amount, total bill, and each person's share appear immediately. Works for USD, GBP, EUR, or any currency. This tool is useful far beyond restaurants. Use it when splitting a bar tab, calculating a tip for a hotel porter, figuring out how much to add to a food delivery order, or settling up at a hair salon. Any time you need to move quickly on a tip without doing mental arithmetic, this calculator gives you a confident number in seconds. Tipping customs also vary significantly outside the US. In the UK, 10–12% is typical. In Australia, tipping is appreciated but not expected. In Japan, tipping is considered rude. If you are travelling, adjust the percentage slider to whatever local norm applies — the per-person split calculation works regardless of where you are or what currency you are paying in.

The Maths Behind Tip Calculator
Tip = Bill × (Tip% ÷ 100) | Per Person = (Bill + Tip) ÷ People
Formula: Tip = Bill × (Tip% ÷ 100) Three inputs, three outputs. The tip amount is the bill multiplied by the tip percentage divided by 100. The total bill is the original plus the tip. Divide that total by the number of people to get each person's share — tip already included. Example: £65 dinner, 12% tip, 3 people. Tip = £65 × 0.12 = £7.80 Total = £65 + £7.80 = £72.80 Per person = £72.80 ÷ 3 = £24.27 The slider defaults to 12% — typical for UK restaurant service. Slide to 15% for excellent service or 10% for counter service. In the US the norm is 18–20%; adjust the slider if you are calculating for a US bill. Some restaurants add a mandatory service charge for large groups; check the bill before adding extra. When to adjust the tip percentage: 0% where a service charge is already included; 10% for counter service and delivery; 12–15% for good sit-down restaurant service in the UK; 18–20% for US table service. Tipping norms vary widely by country — the calculator works the same regardless of which currency you are paying in.
Frequently Asked Questions
How much should I tip at a restaurant in the UK?
10–12% is the typical range for sit-down restaurant service in the UK. 10% is standard, 12–15% signals appreciation for good service. Many UK restaurants already include a discretionary service charge (usually 12.5%) on the bill — check before adding more. Counter service, cafés, and takeaways have no expectation of a tip. In the US the norm is 18–20% for table service.
What is a good tip percentage in 2026?
In the UK, 10–12.5% remains the norm for full-service restaurants. Many venues now auto-add a 12.5% discretionary service charge — you are entitled to remove it if the service was poor. For food delivery apps (Deliveroo, Just Eat, Uber Eats), tipping is optional but appreciated; £1–2 per order or 10% is common. In the US, payment terminals default to 18–20–25%, which has become the baseline expectation.
Should I tip on the pre-VAT or post-VAT amount?
In the UK, tipping on the post-VAT total is standard — most people do not mentally strip out the 20% VAT before calculating. In practice the difference on a £60 bill is small: 12% of £60 is £7.20 versus 12% of the pre-VAT £50 which is £6.00. If a service charge is already included, you do not need to add further.
How do I split a bill when people ordered different amounts?
This calculator splits the total evenly, which suits most situations. For unequal splits, calculate each person's share manually: add up each person's items, apply the tip percentage to their subtotal, and sum those figures. Some modern POS systems and restaurant apps offer itemised splitting natively, which removes the awkward conversation entirely.
