The pet food calculator works out the daily, monthly, and annual cost of feeding your pet based on pack size, price, and daily feeding amount. Enter the bag or can weight, what you paid for it, and how many grams your pet eats per day — the calculator breaks the cost down to every time period you need for budgeting. Pet food costs are easy to underestimate because they are purchased in bulk and consumed gradually. A $55 bag of dog food feels like a one-off spend, but when annualised it becomes a clear line item in your household budget. This calculator makes it easy to compare brands on a cost-per-kg and cost-per-day basis, which matters far more than the sticker price of a single pack. The tool is equally useful for dogs, cats, and any other pet fed on a measured dry food portion. For wet food, use the per-can weight and price. For multi-pet households, run the calculator separately per animal and add the monthly figures together for a total pet food budget.

How It Works

Daily Cost = (Price ÷ Pack kg) × (Daily Grams ÷ 1,000)

Formula: Daily Cost = (Pack Price ÷ Pack Size kg) × (Daily Grams ÷ 1,000) The cost per kilogram is the price divided by the pack weight. The daily cost converts the daily gram portion to kilograms and multiplies by the cost per kg. Monthly multiplies the daily cost by 30.5 (average month length). Annual multiplies by 365. Example: 15 kg pack at $55, feeding 250 g/day. Cost per kg = $55 ÷ 15 = $3.67/kg Daily cost = $3.67 × 0.25 = $0.92/day Monthly = $0.92 × 30.5 = $28.00 Annual = $0.92 × 365 = $335.50 To compare two brands, run each through the calculator and check the daily cost — that is the true apples-to-apples comparison. A $40 bag of 10 kg food costs $4.00/kg and $1.00/day for a 250 g portion, while the $55 bag above costs $3.67/kg and $0.92/day — making the larger, more expensive bag cheaper per feeding despite the higher sticker price.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does it cost to feed a dog per year?

Annual dog food costs vary widely by size and food quality. A small dog (5–10 kg) eating 150 g/day of mid-range dry food (~$4/kg) costs around $220/year. A large dog (30–40 kg) eating 400 g/day costs $580–850/year. Premium or veterinary foods at $8–12/kg roughly double those figures. Use this calculator with your specific pack and feeding amount for an accurate figure.

How do I compare pet food brands by cost?

Always compare on cost per kg, not pack price. A $25 bag of 5 kg food costs $5/kg. A $55 bag of 15 kg food costs $3.67/kg — 27% cheaper per meal. Feeding amount also affects comparison: if your pet eats 20% less of a premium food due to higher calorie density, the higher cost-per-kg may be offset by lower daily grams. Check the feeding guide on both bags for an accurate comparison.

How many grams of dry food should I feed my dog per day?

Feeding amounts depend on your dog's weight, age, and activity level. Most dry food packaging includes a feeding guide. As a rough guide: 5 kg dog needs ~100–150 g/day; 15 kg dog ~200–280 g; 30 kg dog ~300–380 g; 45 kg dog ~430–530 g. These are starting points — adjust based on your vet's advice and whether your dog is gaining or losing condition.

Is wet or dry pet food cheaper per day?

Dry food is almost always cheaper per calorie and per day than wet food. Wet food contains 70–80% water by weight, so you need much larger amounts to deliver the same nutrition. A 400 g can of wet food provides roughly the same calories as 100–130 g of dry food, making wet food 3–5× more expensive per meal for most dogs. Many owners feed a mix for palatability and hydration balance.
